Product Release cleans up…
We were recently approached by a company that produces cleaning agents, including caustic soda and hypochlorite solutions. They needed a coating that would protect the equipment from the corrosive substances used during the production of these products.
The main components at risk from chemical corrosion were the shaft and three blade heads. Damage to any of these parts could result in expensive delays and downtime in production.
To ensure that the surfaces are protected from the highly corrosive chemicals, the metallic substrates need to have an inert film applied to stop the chemicals being able to attack them. We determined that Halar (ECTFE) would be the most suitable option as it provides excellent chemical resistance properties, superior adhesion to metal substrates and has a proven long-lasting performance in aggressive environments.
The old coating was first removed by pyrolysis, after which the substrate was prepared for coating by grit blasting with aluminium oxide. In order to produce a pore-free, chemically resistant coating a multilayer application of Halar was applied by electrostatic spray to achieve a dry film thickness of 600 microns.
